Big River Grille Donates Over $1,000 to Chattanooga’s Homeless After Successful “Brewer’s Select” Promotion Local Reverend Involved in Creating The Seasonal Scottish Ale
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. (May 21, 2010) – Chattanoogans lent a hand to people in need by simply enjoying glasses of chilled, slow-brewed Scottish Ale from Big River Grille’s downtown location. On Thursday, February 4th, patrons had the pleasure of trying the limited-time-only beer while contributing over $1,000 to aid the area’s homeless population.
For every Scottish Ale sold at the downtown location’s tapping party, $1 of the sale was donated to Metropolitan Ministries. The organization, located at 1112 McCallie Avenue, provides assistance for people in the Chattanooga area who are on the verge of homelessness. Big River Grille’s donation will aid in keeping area families in their homes by paying their bills and will also provide vital medicines to people that need them.
The Big River Grille management team presented a check for $1,053 to Metropolitan Ministries on February 17th. Present at the ceremony was Rev. Robert Childers, who played an integral part in the production of Scottish Ale.
Childers, an accomplished home-brewer, worked in conjunction with Big River Grille’s Director of Brewery, Clay Gentry, to devise the beer. He then put in a 9-hour day in the brewing facility at the downtown location assisting with the 8-step brewing process. The Reverend’s delicious Scottish Ale touted a caramel-like sweetness balanced by subtle hop bitterness.
Rev. Childers was present at the tapping party to kick of the annual “Brewer’s Select” promotion featuring Scottish Ale. He blessed the beer and also spoke about his own brewing experiences. Guests enjoyed passed appetizers and samples of Scottish Ale while enjoying live music from The Highlanders.
The mission of Metropolitan Ministries is to receive with dignity and respect all who come to us by providing them the emotional and physical help needed. The Ministry offers them the opportunity to gain deeper faith in themselves and hope for their own futures as independent, contributing members of the community.

Record Turnout for Southern Brewers Festival Generates Record $100k Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group Donation to Chattanooga Kids on the Block Charity

Chattanooga, TN (01/12/09) – In a time marked by dwindling charity contributions, the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group significantly bucked the trend this week by presenting a record $100,000 check to Chattanooga’s Kids on the Block, a United Way charity that provides free programs to teach children and adults about social concerns and differences in a non-threatening manner. The donation, generated by the 14th Annual Southern Brewers Festival sponsored by Gordon Biersch’s Big River Grille & Brewing Works each year, represents an increase of more than 60 percent over the previous year’s contribution and marks the largest single contribution the charity has received.
“This donation is significant not only because of its size, but also the timing. With the current stress on our economy, personal safety is an increasingly important issue for children everywhere and it’s crucial that we continue our work uninterrupted,” said Kelly Williams, Executive Director of Chattanooga’s Kids on the Block. “Businesses like Gordon Biersch make a difference by giving our community the tools and resources that are vital to enhancing local quality of life.”
In total, Gordon Biersch has donated more than $235,000 to Kids on the Block since the partnership began three years ago.
“We’ve been a part of the Chattanooga community for more than 15 years and are proud to support an organization like Chattanooga Kids on the Block that works so hard to improve the lives of children in our hometown,” said Kelly Wilson, Director of Marketing for Gordon Biersch. “Community involvement and charitable giving are core principals of our corporate culture and we are dedicated to making a difference in every city where we have a presence.”
The Southern Brewers Festival is held each August and features over 20 microbreweries from the Southeast, attracting more than 8,000 beer lovers for a day of fun, festivities, food, beer, and music. In total, over 44 premium ales and lagers are sampled during the day-long event and entertainment is provided. All profits from the event benefit Chattanooga Kids on the Block.

Gordon Biersch Unveils New Menu
Fresh starters, innovative entrees and mini desserts highlight menu designed to complement award-winning German-style beersCHATTANOOGA, TENN. (August 5, 2008) – Chattanooga-based Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group, Inc., which operates 27 flagship Gordon Biersch locations across the U.S., has rolled out its new menu featuring seven new dishes tapping into consumer’s increasing appetite for small plates, beer-infused recipes and tasting portions alongside the signature favorites that keep visitors coming back.
The revamped menu reflects Gordon Biersch’s ongoing innovative commitment to meeting the needs and requests of its customers. The company regularly polls customers through visitor surveys and outreach to its loyal Passport members for feedback.
New menu items reflect this feedback by including several favorites from seasonal menus that are being added now as permanent fixtures, including an appetizer of three mini Kobe sliders and ribs with Märzen barbeque sauce (in appetizer or entrée size). Other new dishes include a New York Steak Sandwich and Cashew-Crusted Chilean Sea Bass, and two desserts – Strawberry Cheesecake and Mini Dessert Tasters, sample sized portions of Strawberry Cheesecake, Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie, Carrot Cake, Fresh Berry Trifle and Chocolate Fudge Cake. Two new alcohol-free cocktails – the “No-Jito” and the Pomegranate Cosmo – also join the list of award-winning, German-style beers brewed on site, an extensive wine selection and full bar.
“Consumers are looking for more options when they go out – from tasting portions so they can try multiple flavors to unexpected twists on classic dishes. We took this demand into account when we developed these new menu items,” said Executive Chef Bill Heckler. “Adding the Märzen barbeque ribs, which made their television debut on Good Morning America NOW in May, was a natural. The sauce is a customer favorite and its spicy, smoky flavor is perfect for savory pork ribs. Served with Asian slaw and our trademarked Gordon Biersch Garlic Fries™, the dish is sure to become a menu classic. This and the other dishes really tap into current consumer tastes for fresh, quality foods that complement Gordon Biersch beers.”
Gordon Biersch focuses on offering the highest quality food reflecting its dedication to fresh ingredients and premium standards. Like its signature brews, all Gordon Biersch menu items are prepared onsite from scratch with fresh, seasonal ingredients and include flavor and taste profiles from around the world, progressive dishes and creative twists on menu classics. The new menu items join traditional favorites including signature garlic fries (invented by co-founder Dan Gordon), Southwest Egg Rolls, Cedar Plank Salmon and Steak Frites, among others.
The new menu marks a year of significant growth for Gordon Biersch, which launched new brewery restaurants in Kansas City, Mo., Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Plano, Texas earlier this year and will open another in Annapolis, Maryland in the fall. Adding to the excitement is the commemoration of the brand’s 20th Anniversary, which is being celebrated with “Back to the Future” 80s parties at each of its 27 locations throughout the summer. Gordon Biersch Enters Asian Market
With
First Brewery Restaurant in Taipei
Taiwan opening marks international debut of Chattanooga-based brewery restaurant group known for innovative cuisine and German-style craft beers
Chattanooga-based Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group, Inc., which operates 27 flagship Gordon Biersch locations in the U.S. and celebrates its twenty-year anniversary next month, marked its official international debut with the opening this week of its first Asian location in Taipei, Taiwan.
Located in Taipei’s Xinyi District, the brewery restaurant is a joint venture between the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group, Inc. and G & B Brewery Development (Asia) Corporation to tap the greater China market and its rising demand for U.S. beer. With it, Gordon Biersch becomes the first American brewery restaurant to enter Taiwan since the government opened the market to microbreweries in 2003.
In line with the Gordon Biersch commitment to freshly prepared, innovative international cuisine, the Taipei brewery restaurant will use identical recipes to its U.S. counterparts and fresh ingredients to prepare its made-from-scratch menu. Ninety-five percent of the current offering features items from the U.S. menu, including the trademarked Gordon Biersch Garlic Fries™, along with a number of regional dishes. Further exploration of regional flavors will be the focus for ongoing menu development.
All beers will be brewed according to the same standards found in the U.S. and following the strict German purity law, Reinheitsgebot, which dates back five centuries. The Taipei unit will focus on fresh brewed, traditional beers including Märzen, Czech-Style Pilsner, Hefeweizen and Blonde Bock to start. Due to laws prohibiting on-site brewing, the brand’s renowned craft beers will be made at a brewery in Taipei and delivered fresh to the restaurant each day.
The onsite leadership team is headed by Jeff Lee, President of G & B Brewery Development (Asia), who has a background in foodservice and hospitality, including operations management with TGI Fridays in Taiwan and China and teaching hospitality courses at the Providence University in Taichung, Taiwan. The G & B Brewery Development (Asia) Corporation is led by Brian Green, Chairman of the Lumitek Corporation in Taiwan.
“We are excited to have found a partner that will be able to bring the quality and energy of the Gordon Biersch dining experience to Asia,” said Allen Corey, President and CEO of Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group, Inc. “We have considered numerous opportunities in the past for Asia. With the G & B Brewery Development (Asia) Corporation we have a partner who meets our requirements in terms of financial foundation for growth, operating standards and cultural compatibility. For the first time we have found a true partner capable of operating and growing the Gordon Biersch brand successfully and with the highest quality standards.”
In preparation for the restaurant launch, the senior leadership group from Taiwan made numerous visits to Chattanooga where they learned about operations, marketing, training, construction and menu development to ensure consistent execution of the Gordon Biersch brand in Asia. The Taiwan operations group also spent nine weeks training in Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants in Phoenix, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. A team of training, brewery and culinary experts, led by Liz Stone VP of Training and Recruiting out of the Chattanooga headquarters, spent a significant amount of time in Taiwan consulting on construction, brewing standards, training, operations and marketing.
The opening marks a year of significant growth for Gordon Biersch, which launched new brewery restaurants in Kansas City, Mo., Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Plano, Texas earlier thisyear and will open another in Annapolis, Maryland in the fall. Adding to the excitement is the commemoration of the brand’s 20th Anniversary next month with a week of activities in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the company was founded and bottled beer brewery operations are still based.
In July, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants will celebrate the company’s 20th Anniversary with a week of brewer’s dinners and 80s-themed parties at its San Francisco, Palo Alto and San Jose facilities culminating with a special benefit concert event at its bottling facility in San Jose. VIP packages are available. Special “Back to the Future” 80s parties also will be held at each of its 27 locations throughout the summer. Visit www.gordonbierschrestaurants.com for ticket sales and additional information.

The team at A1A Ale Works highlighted the importance of giving-back to the community by compensating the staff in return for their volunteerism when the restaurant closed its doors for a three week-long renovation. Staff members chose to volunteer for a variety of local St. Augustine and North Florida charities, including Habitat for Humanity, St. Francis House and the Beach Preservation.
Since D.C., Tysons, and Rockville are all neighbors they decided to "pull together" and get better acquainted. What better way than to benefit the Special Olympics and do a Plane Pull for a good cause? That's right, pull a 150,000 lb., FedEx Cargo Plane!! On September 8th, Special Olympics held its 8th Annual, Dulles Day Plane Pull. In a nut shell, teams of 20 people competed against each other for prizes in different categories to include the farthest, the fastest, etc. In order for "Team GB" to be able to compete in the event, we needed to raise money! So why not go for the gold and shoot to be a Premier Sponsor at $8,500? Between the three stores, we put a game plan together on paper and decided to raise $2,850 from each location. Over a three month period, we did it! We raised money through tapping parties, selling "Stars" for Special Olympics, competing in bowl-a-thons, and much more!
Gordon Biersch Tempe hosted its 2nd Annual Thomas J. Pappas School Christmas Party on Monday, December 17, 2007. Thomas J. Pappas is a school for underprivileged children that will unfortunately be closing at the end of this school year. Fortunately, these children were able to enjoy a pizza party at the restaurant, as well as each receiving a wrapped gift that they selected from a table of gifts. Not only was each child blessed this day, but so were the staff who worked this event. Giving and making a difference in the community is what “it” is all about!
Who says Kickball is only fun for second graders? Our very own GB Miami team doesn't think so!! Not only do they have fun playing kickball as a team, but they raise money for local charities doing so!! This year marks the second season for the GB Brew Ballers. Their first season was rather productive, as they finished the season 5-4 and had a three way tie for 3rd place going into the playoffs. Unfortunately, they lost both games in the double elimination round, and watched the two last place teams square off for the championship trophy! That's okay though because during the season the league raised funds in excess of $1,000 to benefit local charity's, including Autism Research and Children Cancer treatment organizations in Southern Florida.
Big River Grille and Brewing Works in Chattanooga, TN recently sponsored the 13th Annual Southern Brewers Festival, to raise funds for the United Way Agency, Chattanooga's Kids on the Block. The brewfest consisted of twenty-one micro breweries from across the Southeast and welcomed over 8,000 patrons for a day of fun, festivities, food, and of course beer! The event featured over thirty premium ales and lagers and live music. In total, the event raised almost $61,000 solely benefiting United Way Agency, Chattanooga's Kids on the Block (CKOB). Over the past two years, Big River has partnered with CKOB to raise a total of $135,841. In a Sponsor Recognition Party, Kelly Wilson, Senior Brand Manager for Gordon
